Testing for trends on a regional scale: Beyond local significance

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Studies detecting trends in climate elements typically concentrate on their local significance, ignoring the question whether significant may or not have occurred due to chance. The present paper fills this gap by examining several approaches statistical significance of defined a grid, that is regional scale. To end, we introduce novel simple procedure testing, which based counting signs (sign test), and compare it with five other testing collective (counting, extended Mann-Kendall, Walker, fdr, regression tests). Synthetic data are used construct null distributions trend statistics, determine critical values tests, assess performance tests terms type II error. For lower spatial temporal autocorrelations, sign test Mann-Kendall perform slightly better than test; these three outperform quite wide margin. high more realistic case, all become similar performance, exception test, performs somewhat worse. Some cannot be under specific conditions because construction: Walker fdr for autocorrelations; autocorrelations.

Isostatic compensation on a continental scale: local versus regional mechanisms

Using the techniques of linear and quadratic programming, it can be shown that the isostatic response function for the continental United States, computed by Lewis & Dorman (1970), is incompatible with any local compensation model that involves only negative density contrasts beneath topographic loads. We interpret the need for positive densities as indicating that compensation is regional rath...

Correlation and Large-Scale Simultaneous Significance Testing

Large-scale hypothesis testing problems, with hundreds or thousands of test statistics “zi” to consider at once, have become familiar in current practice. Applications of popular analysis methods such as false discovery rate techniques do not require independence of the zi’s, but their accuracy can be compromised in high-correlation situations. This paper presents computational and theoretical ...

Testing Regional Convergence in Iran's Economy

Convergence hypothesis is one of the results of neoclassical growth model, which has been examined recently. This hypothesis has two forms of absolute and conditional Beta-convergence and implies that regions with lower per capita output have higher per capita growth rates. Since there is no data for regional GDP in Iran, there has been n study to test convergence hypothesis in Iran. Our main c...

Genes Predisposing to Monogenic, Polygenic, and Syndromic Obesity: A Review of Current Trends and Prospects for Standard Obesity Genetic Testing

Objective: The burden of obesity is currently enormous, necessitating a novel strategy to complement the existing ones. Accordingly, genetic predisposition is suspected in many cases of the disease, which can potentially be used as therapeutic targets. However, there are differing viewpoints on the suspect genes, prompting the current review to articulate the genes and their mechanisms. Eight (...

Ridge Belts: Evidence for Regional- and Local-scale Deformation on the Surface of Venus

We evaluate models for the formation of the ridge belt fan assemblage on Venus through consideration of the orientation, spatial distribution, topographic expression and wavelengths of observed tectonic surface features. We favor a compressional mechanism for long wavelength deformation corresponding to the spacing of ridge belts (300_<),<400 kin). However, short wavelength ridges and grooves (...
